Objectif

 

Contenu

There are two objectives to the Dynamics of Technological Innovation, viz., to enhance knowledge (objectives 1 and 2) and to develop some key abilities (objectives 3 and 4). At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1) understand the role of technological innovation in the knowledge economy;
2) identify the real effect of innovation on the competitive advantage of nations and firms;
3) incorporate technological innovation into the strategic thinking and organisational structure of the firm, industries and the market economy more generally;
4) and appreciate the entrepreneurial skills and philosophical approaches which balance conservatism with creativity—stability with change—within the information society.

Prérequis

Whilst a familiarity with management science, economics, sociology, philosophy or science would be a plus, no specific prerequisite is demanded.

Approches pédagogiques

Each class commences with a lecture that gives an overview of the topic, which is followed by an interactive seminar based on selected readings and case studies. The assumption is that merely listening to lectures does not enable the student to master economic events, nor does it automatically do anything for the student’s practical business skills. Accumulated economic and managerial experience is as much a question of learning by doing as learning
by thinking, such that case studies and readings present the context and organisational circumstances surrounding a particular economic event or managerial situation. They put the student at the heart of the action and familiarises them with the relevant circumstances, notwithstanding that each situation requires its own diagnosis and tailor-made solutions.
